Before we begin
The macOS has a basic report that lets you know the current condition of your MacBook’s battery. You can check the battery capacity, charge cycles, and condition. This information can indicate if your battery is healthy or if it’s time to get the battery replaced. You can check your MacBook Battery’s health by following this guide.
MacBook Battery Saver Apps
1. Battery Indicator
Battery Indicator is a nifty little app for your MacBook that replaces the native battery icon on the menu bar with a more informative icon. Full disclosure, you need to manually remove the native battery icon but once you do that, you would never need it again. The app shows an exact percentage left in your battery right on the icon which is very useful. Other than that, when you plug in the charger, the app icon also tells you the remaining time left to fully charge the battery. The app is available on the Mac App Store for $2.99. Get Battery Indicator ($2.99)
2. Battery Monitor- Customize Low battery notification
There have been times when I got the low battery notification and until I could actually find and plug in the charger, the MacBook died. Turns out, Battery Monitor can actually change the percentage at which you would receive the notification. It’s really useful and easy to set up. Just install the app and that’s it. The app sits in the Menu bar and sends a notification when the battery level drops below a certain point. Not just that, you can even configure the upper limit as well. Battery Monitor is available on the App Store for free. Get Battery Monitor (free)
3. Al Dente- Stop overcharging the battery
Al Dente is a macOS app that prevents your MacBook from fully charging the battery. As Li-ion batteries should be charged to 80% for maximum efficiency and longevity, Al Dente does that for you. Simply install the utility and set a percentage and you’re done. The app automatically stops charging your MacBook once the battery reaches the charging level set. Currently, the app supports Catalina, and above, I tested it on Big Sur and the app worked flawlessly. The app is free and you can get it from the GitHub repo. Although you can’t stop the iPhone from charging past 80%, you can still set up a notification that can remind you to unplug your iPhone. Get Al Dente (free)
4. Endurance- Low Power Mode on MacBook
Unlike the iPhone, MacBooks don’t have a low power mode which is a bummer because using the low power mode can buy you some additional precious minutes before you can plug in your Charger. Endurance is designed to do just that, it lets you efficiently prioritize the battery consumption across the computer. The app can monitor other battery hogging apps, slow down your processor, put background apps to sleep, and automatically dim the screen. You can squeeze 20% more juice from the battery with this app. Endurance is a paid app that costs $10 and you can get a free trial before buying the full version. Get Endurance (Free trial, $10)
5. Batteries for Mac
The battery widget on the iPhone offers great utility where you can get the battery levels of your Apple Watch and AirPods on the iPhone but, it is missing on macOS. Batteries for Mac bridges that gap and allows you to monitor the battery levels of your Apple devices from the MacBook. You can get the battery levels of AirPods, iPhones, iPad, Apple Keyboard, and Trackpad. Unfortunately, the app can’t get the battery levels of the Apple Watch on the macOS. Batteries for Mac has a 14-day free trial and you can purchase the full version of the app for $5. Get Batteries for Mac (free trial, $5)
6. Coconut Battery
Coconut Battery is a macOS app that offers comprehensive information about the battery health of your MacBook. The app visualizes the battery health numbers and represents those in bars which makes it easy to grasp the battery health. Not just MacBooks, you can even monitor the battery health of your iPhone and iPad as well. Overall, Coconut Battery is a healthy addition to your MacBook when you want a one stop solution to monitor the battery health of your MacBook, iPhone, and iPad. Coconut Battery is free and you can get it from their website. Get Coconut Battery (free, $10)
