Connect Sony WH1000-XM4 to Two Devices
The process to connect to the Sony XM4’s to 2 devices is a bit lengthy but much simpler. To give you a gist here’s what we will go through.
Connect the XM4 to the 1st device Install and open the Sony Headphones Connect app Turn ON the “Connect to 2 devices simultaneously” option Put the headphones in pairing mode Connect the XM4 to the 2nd device.
In my case, I am using an Android device and a Windows laptop. First, we’ll connect the WH1000-XM4’s to the Android device. The Sony XM4’s come with GFP (Google Fast Pair). So, the moment you turn ON your headphones and bring it near the Android device, there’ll be a pop-up on Android asking to connect the headphones.
Once you have the headphone connected to the Android device, we need to connect it to the Sony Headphones Connect app. To do that, download and install the Sony Headphones Connect app on your 1st Android phone. Download Sony Headphones Connect App (Android | iOS)
Once you have the app installed, open it, select your Country and check on the Terms and Conditions. Further, you’ll be prompted to name and register your Sony WH1000-XM4. Just tap on “OK“. Further steps are pretty self-explanatory, just tap on “NEXT” and “LATER” wherever available.
Once you have the headphones registered in the app, head over to the “System” tab and turn on the toggle for the “Connect to 2 devices simultaneously” option. This will enable your headphones to connect to 2 devices simultaneously.
Now, head back to the “Status” tab, you would see the currently connected device name under the “Device Currently Connected” tab. In order to connect to the 2nd device, tap on the option. On the “Manage Connected Device” page, tap on the “+” icon at the bottom-right corner of the page.
Next, your Sony WH1000-XM4 would switch to pairing mode. Once you hear the prompt on the headphones, connect it to the 2nd device. In my case, it’s the Windows 10 laptop.
You can see both the connected devices in the Sony Headphones app. It makes managing Bluetooth connections easier from a single device within the app.
The device’s Bluetooth addresses are saved on the headphone’s onboard memory. It’ll automatically connect to both the devices even if you uninstall the app. The XM4’s can seamlessly switch between both the connected devices. For instance, if you’re playing a video on the Windows 10 laptop and you receive a call on your smartphone, the XM4’s will pause the video on Windows 10 and switch over to the Android device. Once you disconnect the call, the media is resumed on Windows 10 and the XM4’s are back to the laptop. The only downside of connecting to 2 devices is the loss of Hi-Fi Bluetooth audio. Once you turn on the “Connect to 2 devices simultaneously” option, the Sony WH1000-XM4 will switch to the AAC codec from the Hi-Fi codec LDAC.
